Two rails and a route made for the stairs
The 4000 uses two rails, unlike Handicare’s single-rail Freecurve. Its rail is built around the staircase, so a full photo of the bends and landings is useful when describing where a fault occurs.
The rail layout also matters for removal or a proposed transfer. Include both rail ends and any nearby doorway. A curved rail made for this staircase needs assessment before reuse elsewhere is considered.
Seat names do not replace the model number
Handicare lists Style, Smart and Simplicity seats for the 4000, along with powered options. A seat name alone does not identify the whole lift, so include a model label and a photo of the carriage beneath the seat where safely visible.
Say whether the seat turns manually or under power and whether the footrest folds manually or under power. If travel works but one of these features does not, that is worth explaining separately.
A hinge or doorway deserves its own photo
A powered hinged rail is an option on the 4000, allowing the track to fold clear of a doorway. If fitted, include it in the enquiry and describe what it does when the problem occurs. Do not force it or try to defeat its controls.
Also send any display message, the last service date and whether the issue began suddenly or developed over time. For removal, wider photos of the access space help us understand the installation before discussing the work.
A useful starting point
Tell us what you have, and what has changed.
We work on many stairlift brands. The exact model, installation and fault matter, so send a few details to confirm the options and any parts needed.
- The model name and serial number, if you can read the label safely.
- What happens when you try to use the lift, including any displayed code or sound.
- Your county, and whether you need a repair, service, removal or replacement.
If the lift is not working normally, avoid using it until you have advice. Do not bypass a safety device or open the lift to investigate.

Questions about the Handicare 4000
Is a Handicare 4000 the same as a Freecurve?
No. Both are curved models, but the 4000 uses a twin-rail system and Freecurve uses a single rail. Use the model label rather than the chair’s appearance to identify it.
Does every 4000 have a powered swivel and hinged rail?
No. Handicare describes powered features and a hinged rail as options. Tell us what is fitted to your lift and which function is causing trouble so the enquiry can be assessed accurately.
