The Most Common Stairlift Fault We See

Nine times out of ten, a stairlift that's playing up comes down to one thing — its batteries.

The Most Common Stairlift Fault We See

Ask any stairlift engineer what they get called out for most, and you'll hear the same answer: batteries. Nearly every stairlift built in the last twenty years runs off a battery pack rather than the mains, and when that pack starts to tire, the lift lets you know in a hurry.

The good news is that it's the easiest fault to plan for. Catch it early and a quick battery swap has you back to normal. Leave it, and you risk being stranded halfway up the stairs at the worst possible moment.

Why batteries are almost always the culprit

A stairlift battery works hard. Every trip up and down draws from it, and it tops itself back up at the charge point between journeys. Over the years that constant cycle wears it down, until it can no longer hold enough charge to finish a trip. That's when the tell-tale symptoms start.

The warning signs to watch for

The lift stops partway up

You set off, and a few feet up the stairs the lift simply cuts out. Nudge the control again and it crawls a little further before stopping once more. That stop-start behaviour is the classic sign of a battery on its way out.

It's running slower than it used to

If your stairlift feels sluggish, labours on the way up, or takes noticeably longer to reach the top than it once did, the batteries are struggling to deliver the power the motor is asking for.

It's beeping constantly

A lift that beeps non-stop is usually telling you it isn't charging. Make sure it's parked properly on its charge point and that the charger is plugged in and switched on at the wall. If it still beeps once it's parked, the batteries or the charger likely need attention.

How often should batteries be replaced?

As a rule of thumb, stairlift batteries last around three to four years. If your lift gets heavy daily use, you might find you're changing them a little sooner. The sensible approach is to replace them before they fail completely rather than waiting to be caught out — a planned swap is always easier than an emergency one.

If any of this sounds familiar, we replace stairlift batteries on all the major brands right across Ireland's 26 counties, usually on the first visit. Book online or call us on 087 737 9265 and we'll get you sorted.
